Fernand Léger National Museum in Biot, French Riviera

Fernand Léger museum

The Fernand Léger museum was built in 1960 by the painter’s wife, Nadia Léger and Georges Bauquier his assistant. It is located on “mas Saint-André” in Biot, place of residence and work of the painter. He had acquired the farmhouse in 1955, shortly before his death.

The museum was designed by architect Andrei Svetchine. It is in the middle of a cool, shady park designed by Henri Fisch. It has a very nice refreshment stall to admire the mosaics arranged on the outer walls of the museum.

The Fernand Léger museum exhibits a hundred works of the artist, paintings, sculptures and ceramics.

Fernand Léger and the First World War

Fernand Léger was 33 in 1914. He was called to go fight the Germans during the First World War. It was part of an engineer regiment, army where he had done his military service.

So he spent the war to provide logistical support to the infantrymen by building roads and trenches. Although he escaped the horror of the fighting on the front line, this experience has profoundly affected him.

Fernand Léger was inspired by the First World War and made many works and drawings illustrating the war. The most famous being « card players » painted in 1917.
